The BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE is an international scientific research prize, sponsored by BOC Hong Kong, that was established to recognize scientists who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and FinTech. The award will be presented to no more than 5 persons (or teams) per field per year. The winner of each field will receive HKD 2,000,000, a certificate and a trophy.
During the ceremony, the Chief Executive lauded the work of the prize laureates for their remarkable insights and innovation, saying that these “open the doors to the realm of scientific possibility.” The winner of the Mathematical Sciences Prize, Eugene Higgins Professor Peter Sarnak from Princeton University, was honoured for his contribution to number theory, combinatorics, dynamical systems, geometry and spectral theory.
He said that the prize winners’ remarkable achievements are an inspiration for young people to strive for excellence in the world of science and technology. He added that the HKSAR government is committed to developing Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology center.
In addition to the prize money, the winning athletes will be rewarded with medals and a cash grant. The gold medal is worth HK$12 million, the silver medal HK$6 million and the bronze medal HK$3 million. Athletes who finish outside the top three but within the top eight will also receive a substantial amount of cash.
A team of scholars will assess the applications and select the best proposals, and the final result will be announced in late 2022 or early 2023. The scholarship is open to students who are enrolled in full-time postgraduate programmes in the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education.
The HK$25,000 prize will be awarded to the best academic research paper published in the journal. The authors will be given an opportunity to present their research at the HKPF annual meeting. In addition, the winning paper will be published in a special issue of the journal in 2022.
