This category of award recognizes and celebrates trailblazing creatives who make a difference with their work. Winners will receive a cash prize of up to $7000, as well as the Festival’s mesmeric swirl award, designed and handmade in Sydney by Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy of Dinosaur Designs.
The Lucy Firth Honours Thesis Prize is awarded to a student who has written an excellent honours thesis and has been impacted by extenuating circumstances throughout their studies at the University of Sydney. The prize is funded by the Lucy Firth Bequest made in 1997.
Established by the Committee of the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts in memory of their former President Maxwell E Arthur, this scholarship is offered to students completing their Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Philosophy who have demonstrated excellence in their studies. The scholarship is worth $5000, and consists of a grant of $21 000 over two years.
Since 1950, the Hillman Foundation has honored journalists who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in service of humanity. Whether they are documenting the ravages of climate change, the horrors of war and terrorism, or the struggles of abused women, the foundation honors those who exemplify reportorial excellence, narrative skill and social justice impact. Laureates include the New York Times in regard to Haitian debt, Rose Arce’s series on being held captive by Taliban, and Ta-Nehisi Coates.
The Neilma Sidney Prize, administered by Overland magazine in conjunction with the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, provides one winner with a first prize of $5,0oo and publication both online and in print. Two runners-up will also receive $750 prizes. The judging panel is looking for stories that have travel themes, but which go beyond simply describing a place or landscape – the judges want to see stories which move the story along further.
