Become a Volun-spear…

There are thousands of kids across Chicagoland waiting for Purple Asparagus to bring Delicious Nutritious Adventures to their classroom.
We can’t do it alone. Every volunteer DOES make a difference!

Are you a certified teacher, a trained chef or chef in training, a good home cook, or health food enthusiast who loves working with kids? We need your help organizing and presenting school programs.

Lead Instructors are asked to make a commitment of 4-5 hours every month for 9 months.
Responsibilities include:

  • Run the Delicious Nutritious Adventures program one day per month for nine-months, from October through June, in a designated school.

  • Schedule program dates with the program site contact and Purple Asparagus program manager.

  • Collect and return to Purple Asparagus student allergy forms, photo release forms and surveys as needed.

  • Review monthly lesson plans provided by Purple Asparagus and collaborate with staff to ensure readiness for program delivery.

  • Lead and direct assistant instructors while on site.

  • Execute program according to curricula.

  • Pick up and return supplies to/from Purple Asparagus office before and after programming.

  • Must pass a background check.

Whether it’s for a program in your own child’s school or in any of Purple Asparagus’ partner schools, our Chef Instructors always welcome an extra pair of hands.

Classroom Assistants are asked to make a commitment of 3-4 hours every month.
Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the lead instructors in executing our Delicious Nutritious Adventures programming.

  • Assist with program set up, food preparation, distribute materials, food samples and recipes to students.

  • Engage with students in discussion about the ingredients they are trying.

  • Assist with anything else the lead instructor needs.

  • Program Assistants can commit to programs as they are scheduled and may work at multiple locations throughout the school year.

  • Must pass a background check.

Throughout the year, Purple Asparagus hosts informal, drop-in programs at farmers markets, health fairs and green expos; provides activities at community festivals and events; and engages our community with lots of other exciting, one-time opportunities where you can volunteer.

Volunteers must pass a background check prior to participating. Once registered, you will receive occasional emails with upcoming opportunities.
