His award was presented to him by his wife, Tong.
Several of Hong Kong’s democracy activists were nominated for the prize by US lawmakers. Some of them are currently in prison after Beijing enacted its new National Security Law and cracked down on dissent following the unrest. Others have chosen to stay in Hong Kong, where they are fighting for the freedom of expression and human rights.
The prize will be awarded in three waves – Southeast Asian residents will be the first to be eligible for the award, followed by mainland Chinese, and then international applicants.
