The Hong Kong Film Awards were held on Sunday night at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre with Wai Ka Fai winning best director for To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self. The show was star-studded and saw many of the nominees walk the red carpet. The ceremony marked the 41st year of the awards and was hosted by actress Michelle Yeoh.
Each year, RTHK, TVB, CRHK and Metro Radio hold their own music awards ceremonies that receive much attention from the media, fans and record labels. The winners are usually determined by votes from the public, as well as by industry professionals and the judges. The prizes at these music awards are usually substantial. This year the organisers of the HK Radio Music Award will give out a total prize of over HK$4 million, with a first prize of over HK$1.5 million and runner-ups getting around HK$500,000.
The 2024 Sovereign Asian Art Prize results were announced at a gala dinner on May 17. The winner was Pakistani artist Sameen Agha for her sculpture A Home is a Terrible Place to Love, which depicts a house crumbling like cardboard. Other finalists included Michelle Fung from Hong Kong for her mixed media work Red Bean Stalk, and Demet from the Philippines for his PPE, Paint Palette Emulation.
In addition to the main prize, there are four merit awards and five special awards. The winner of the main prize will receive an engraved gold medal and a cash prize of HK$25,000. The other prize winners will be awarded an engraved bronze medal and a cash prize of HK$10,000. The merit awards will be exhibited at the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture from September 27 until October 8.
This year’s Spirit of Hong Kong Award honours ordinary yet exemplary Hong Kong citizens, highlighting their genuine spirit of charity, civic awareness and goodwill through their inspiring stories of overcoming personal challenges, community contribution, acts of self-sacrifice, innovating for good, preserving our heritage and tenacious entrepreneurship. They are the people who inspire us all and make Hong Kong a better place.
The ICAS Book Prize on Global Hong Kong Studies is the newest addition to the ICAS family of Asia-related prize competitions. It is organised and sponsored by the Society for Hong Kong Studies (SHKS). It seeks to recognise excellence in research on global Hong Kong and China studies. The deadline for submission is 31 August.
The ICAS Book Prize on Global Hong Kong and China Studies is open to all Fellows of the ICAS who have published a peer-reviewed article in the field of Hong Kong and China studies before 1 January 2023.
